Temperature Sensors for Railway Technology

Our sensors are used worldwide in high-speed trains, cargo and regional trains, metros, trams and hybrid buses. They monitor the temperature of traction motors, gears and wheel-set bearings.

Temperature sensors for rail vehicles are produced according to customer requirements. Each sensor consists of the housing with measuring transducer, a cable connection, the cable screw connection and, if applicable, a plug connection. Solid and highly vibration-resistant brass housings in various versions are used for the housing. The cable connection port is available in any angle from 90 to 180 degrees. The stainless steel protective pipe designs have a diameter of Ø 5 mm to Ø 12 mm and a length of up to 250 mm. The size and position of the fastening holes are adjusted accordingly. Single or double Pt100/Pt1000 chip sensors in 2, 3 or 4 wire circuits are used as standard.

The cable connection is responsible for the transmission of the sensor signals and is the most important link between the sensors and plug connections. EPHYMESS therefore uses screened special hose lines that fully meet the requirements regarding mechanical, chemical and thermal stability. They usually consist of a silicone-free, halogen-free, 4 wire, screened hose line with an operating temperature range of -40°C ... +150°C. The cable connections are resistant to stone chipping, cleaning fluids, salt, alkali and other external influences.  Plastic, metal corrugated tube or rubber fabric hoses offer additional mechanical protection.

The plug connections form the sensor systems interface to further components and allow easy, problem-free connection of the sensor technology to the analysis units. Standard plug connections from various manufacturers are used (as requested by customers). Adapted to the specific requirements and the measuring signals to be transmitted, they are produced in a sealed design. Variants with isolating plugs enable short cable lengths with direct cable laying on and through the housing. When system plugs are used, the number of plug components and individual parts is reduced as the lines are guided together. This reduces the required assembly and maintenance work.

When selecting the right components, high standards are demanded for safe operation, low construction effort, low vulnerability to malfunction and high availability. EPHYMESS temperature sensors for rail vehicles combine all these criteria and can be put together in a large number of combinations.

Speed sensors

EPHYMESS speed sensors are used to reliably detect the speed and direction of rotation of e.g. locomotives, multiple units and high-speed trains.

Alongside temperature sensors, speed sensors are another component in EPHYMESS GmbH’s modular sensor concept for rail vehicles. They can be installed in high-speed trains, metros and trams all over the world. Magnetic incremental encoders (Hall effect) are used in sensor wheels made from steel or iron (ferromagnetic). In (electrically conductive) aluminium cog wheels, speed sensors based on the eddy current principle make reliable measurement possible.

Speed sensors measure rotational movements on involute or rectangular geared sensor wheels in 1 and 2 channel versions. They are available for cog wheel modules from 1.0 to 3.0. They have a max. switching frequency of 20,000 Hz, or 25,000 Hz in special implementations. The speed sensors are also suitable for zero speed.

Since the magnets inside the speed sensor are resistant to high temperatures, the magnetisation remains unchanged across the entire temperature range of -50°C to 125°C. They are available as versions with a power supply (VL) or a current loop design (CL). The speed sensors offer excellent long-term stability.

The sensors meet the requirements of protection classes IPx6 and IPx8, and conform with the following standards: DIN EN 61373 Cat. 3, UIC 564-2, DIN EN 45545-2, DIN EN 50305, DIN EN 50121-3-2, DIN EN 60332-1-2, DIN EN 61034-2, DIN EN 60068-2-27, DIN EN 60947-5-2 and NF F16-101.

Oil level gauges

Robust and vibration-proof oil level gauges especially produced for transport technology. They are optimised for use in underfloor areas of rail vehicles and can even withstand stone chipping.

Oil level gauges are used to observe the fill level and to detect operating situations. They enable quick, easy visual control and can also be used for other media, alongside systems filled with oil or with an oil flow. The optional reflector makes the level easy to read even in poor visibility. As well as the basic version with a viewing window, EPHYMESS also produces level gauges with a patented two-chamber system with impact protection. The oil level gauges guarantee absolute tightness and high resistance to every kind of oil and other media. Brass, stainless steel and aluminium housing is available, depending on the application.

The basic version has a sight glass that allows the oil level to be seen quickly and easily during servicing and maintenance. This is absolutely sufficient in protected areas. For additional protection, special Makrolon glass can be used. This combines the benefits of the single window with the robust properties of the two-chamber system. EPHYMESS’ patented two-chamber system for oil level gauges also has a stainless steel grid as impact protection.  If the out glass breaks due to impact, the stainless steel grid catches the projectile, so that the inner special glass remains intact and no gear oil can escape. The defective glass can be replaced quickly during a routine inspection, with no need to drain the oil. The special glass can withstand projectiles with a mass of 30 g and a speed of up to 50 m/s. The operating temperature is between -30°C … +120°C. A reflector can be installed and markings applied on request. The two-chamber oil level gauges are also used in particularly tough industrial environments (e.g. mining). Installation tools are available as an option.
